Young members, enjoy the history and science of Hot Air Ballooning through a teamwork discovery process. Young members will design, build, and test a 4’-6’ tall hot air balloon. The teams will launch their balloons and compete with each other as they use their hot air balloons to reach new heights.

This is a unique opportunity to learn up close about the sport of Hot Air Ballooning from a certified pilot instructor.

Daily Schedule

DAY 1 & 2 | Intro to Hot Air Ballooning

Play helium balloon games and build a balloon! Using patterns and tissue paper, cut and assemble balloon pieces. Build, test, evaluate.

DAY 3 | Engineering for Purpose

You’ve learned the rules; now you can break the rules to discover what your creativity can produce. Design for highest altitude, longest flight, greatest payload

DAY 4 | Make it Happen

Competition, test flights, helium balloon obstacle course. Simulation gas balloon: using a 2’ helium balloon with organic ballast, against simulated weather conditions such as wind and rain.

DAY 5 | Celebrate

Celebrate your success by being a passenger in a real hot air balloon (tethered)* complete with a traditional post-flight “champagne*” toast!
